Michael Smith is Of Counsel based in Quinn Emanuel’s Washington, D.C. office. His practice focuses on complex commercial litigation and internal investigations. Prior to joining the firm, Mike worked in multiple capacities as a lawyer with the Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco), most recently as the Chief Counsel for Aramco Asia in Beijing, China. While with Aramco, he managed hundreds of millions of dollars in contractual, employment and construction disputes as well as responses to international government investigations. He also advised on a the world’s largest expansion project financing, multi-billion dollar joint ventures and corporate governance matters.
Mike previously practiced law at another international law firm in Washington, D.C., working primarily on complex commercial litigation and government investigations. Prior to attending law school, Mike played semi-professional basketball in Biloxi, Mississippi and taught high school mathematics in Washington, D.C. area public schools.
- The Retirement Systems of Alabama - Counsel to the pension fund of the state of Alabama with respect to an SEC investigation of alleged insider trading. After demonstrating significant cooperation and remedial measures, matter was resolved through the issuance of a Section 21(a) Report of Investigation with no further enforcement action.
- Hopson v. Mayor and City Council of Baltimore (U.S.D.C. Maryland) Pro bono counsel to African-American Baltimore City Police officers in discrimination suit against the City of Baltimore for disparate discipline. Secured favorable settlement on behalf of named plaintiffs as well as material non-monetary concessions by the City of Baltimore.
- Bischoff v. Frank Brunckhorst Co. and Boar’s Head Provisions (Sup. Ct. N.Y. County) – Counsel to privately held companies and certain owners in derivative action alleging breach of contract and fiduciary duties. Secured favorable settlement for dismissal of action.
